FALL FOR HISTORY 2022

“Wallace: A Checkered Past”

Thursday, September 29
FFH Kick-off and Social, 7 p.m., Barnard-Stockbridge Museum. Enjoy the Upstairs/Downstairs Display on “Ladies” of Wallace. Light refreshments.

Friday September 30
“Where They Stashed the Millions,” 2 p.m. Leaves from Wallace Library.  Historian Shauna Hillman will lead a tour of the vaults and safes that held the riches of Wallace’s heyday.
“The Story of the Samuels,” 4 p.m., Samuels Park. Dedication of a new interpretive sign.
“The FBI Raids Wallace,” 7 p.m., Elks Lodge upstairs.Learn about the day the FBI stormed in to shut down gambling and prostitution. Panel features retired attorney Mike Branstetter, author and researcher Heather Branstetter, and attorney Hollis Anderson telling how the raid was conducted and its effects on businesses and the community. (Note: The Elks Lodge upstairs is not handicap accessible.)

Saturday, October 1
“Skeletons in the Closet,” Peek into the nooks and crannies of buildings that shaped the culture of Wallace. Guided walking tours leave at various time select your time on ticketing checkout  (10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m). Tours depart from the Elks Lodge and ends with light refreshments at the Jameson.
Poker Run: Pick up a playing card at each building. Bring your cards to casino night to see if you have the winning hand.
“Grub and Games.” Elks Lodge. Doors open 5 p.m., dinner (steak or chicken) 6 p.m., casino games with prizes 7-9 p.m.

Sunday, October 2
“Burke Revisited.” Two time slots select your time on ticketing checkout (9 a.m. OR 1 p.m.) bus departs from Wallace Library. If you missed this popular event in 2021, here’s your chance to learn the colorful history of Burke on a tour led by local historians Charlie Mooney and Steve Turley.
“Give Me That Old-Time Religion” 10 a.m. Worship service in the historic Methodist Church. Freewill offering. Come a few minutes early to see the circuit-riding preacher arrive by horseback.

Celebrate Wallace’s colorful history in the most colorful time of the year. Wallace’s Fall for History Festival is a gala celebration of Wallace’s heritage and its designation as entirely listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Speakers, historic home and museum tours, live theater, military reenactments and more.

This year’s theme– Wallace, A Checkered Past highlights the town’s causal relationship with authority. Marital law, FBI raids, regulated gambling and red light district, plus murder, mayhem, ghosts, ghost buildings and more. Watch this space for updates, ticket info and details.
