Described as one of the most scenic stretches of rails-to-trails in the nation, it is the “Crown Jewel” of all rail-to-trail projects in the country – delivering a one-of-a-kind adventure for visitors.
Trail includes 10 tunnels & 7 trestles as high as 230ft. The trail runs through the Bitterroot Mountains at a gradual 1.6% average downhill grade, dropping 1,000ft over its 15 mile length. The Taft or St. Paul Pass Tunnel is 1.66 miles long and averages a refreshing 47 degrees all summer long. The Hiawatha is open late May to late September – 7 days a weeks – 8:30a to 5p PDT. Go to Lookout Pass Ski & recreation area to rent bikes, helmets & lights and purchase trail & return shuttle tickets. Helmets & lights are required on the trail! We rent adult & child mountain bikes, as well as canvas bike trailers & tagalongs for kids. Your ticket to ride helps fund maintenance of the trail, which is operated by Lookout Pass Ski & Recreation Area, under special use permit from the USFS!
